Venerable Geshe Dorji Damdul, a distinguished Buddhist scholar and academic in Tibetan Buddhism, was in residence at Vana from December 28th, 2016 to January 3rd, 2017 to host sessions on Shamatha and Special Insight Meditation.

He has great personal interest in Indian wisdom and also has been an official translator to His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama, since 2005. He is currently the Director of Tibet House, the Cultural Centre of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, based in New Delhi. He travels widely within India and abroad to teach Buddhist philosophy, psychology, logic and practice, and gives regular lectures at Tibet House and many universities and institutes.

During his Specialist Retreat at Vana, science of logic and reasoning was discussed to understand our mind and emotions. Geshe Dorji Damdul’s vast experience was evident while dealing with the complexities of mind and emptiness. Insights on the importance of recognising the deceptive nature of mind, common mistakes while meditating and remedies and correct posture were shared with our Vanavasis for a better understanding.

This was one of our first deeper short retreats focused on inner development, insight and meditation. It points to our intent and efforts to create more such opportunities for learning and the personal journey of Vanavasis.

We are grateful to Geshe Dorji Damdul La for giving us his most valuable time and leaving us with knowledge, wisdom and a practice that will serve many of us for a long time to come.
